A mostly flat walk in to the campsite. After camp is set up there are a variety of hills and destinations to explore, possibly Mt Kosciuszko or towards Lake Albina. This will be a walking trip but people are welcome to carry skis to the campsite if they want to ski the remaining drifts in the area. Thu, 5 Sep 2024 - Sun, 8 Sep 2024 All Day |
A multi-day tour with a mix of a base camp, touring, sightseeing, and hills.
Thredbo Main Terminal, Thredbo NSW |
A multi-day tour with a mix of a base camp, touring, sightseeing, and hills on the Kosciusko Main Range. The exact route will be dependent on snow coverage and conditions, weather, and the participants. My idea is to head out from Thredbo towards the country to the west of Kosciusko which is usually too far to reach in a day trip from Charlottes Pass. We could then spend the next day skiing from the tents. After this, move towards Twynam and set up another base camp before heading back to Thredbo. A possible route includes Wilkinsons Creek, Abbott Peak, Mount Townsend, and Mount Twynam. In case of bad weather, Plan B would be to do something similar at a lower altitude starting from Munyang (Guthega Power Station) and heading out towards Mawsons Hut/Tin Hut/Mt Jagungal area. The tour is a joint trip with the NSW Nordic Ski Club. People who are competent independent skiers could come for part of the trip. Intermediate-Advanced skills Rollin-Hilly terrain Medium distance |
Tue, 3 Sep 2024 All Day |
Top of Thredbo
Thredbo Main Terminal, Thredbo NSW |
Will catch the chairlift to the top of Thredbo (approx $50) then head out onto the Ramshead Range or towards Mt Kosciuszko, depending on the conditions. Sunny weather is forecast for Tuesday at this stage. If it is still too windy then may look at another destination. Basic-Intermediate skills, Rolling-Hilly terrain, Medium distance |

Perisher Nordic Centre, Perisher Valley NSW |
Ski on either day or both days. We will go where the snow looks good. The tempo will be pretty relaxed and ambitions will be tailored to the skill level of the group – that said, participants should not be beginners or almost-beginners. Possible areas for skiing include: Johnnies Plain (maybe Trapyard Creek) from Perisher; Thredbo River corridor from Dead Horse Gap; the Betts Creek-lower Paralyser area from Perisher. Accommodation is available at Kalkite ($60/night). Participants could travel down for whichever tour they are doing early on the day of the tour or travel to Kalkite the previous afternoon/evening. The leader intends to stay at Kalkite Tuesday night and probably also Monday night. Basic-Intermediate (but not too ‘basic’)s Rolling – perhaps onto medium-gradient slopes Medium distance |

Mystery Tour out of the Selwyn/Kiandra area
Mt Selwyn Resort, Mt Selwyn NSW |
At this stage the forecast for Sunday is for snowy conditions so I am thinking of a tour out to Broken Dam Hut or possibly somewhere north of Kiandra (eg Gooandra Hut or Tantangara Hut) if there is sufficient snow at lower altitudes. I will aim to do a small circuit but it might end up being a there and back tour. The tour will be up to 20km or so of undulating terrain and suiting skiers with intermediate skills. It’s not a beginners trip. I can take anyone from Kalkite wanting to join my tour. I’ll be heading home to Canberra on Sunday night. Intermediate skills Rolling terrain Medium distance |

Introduction to Snowy Plains |
Snowy Plains, comprising much of the catchments of the Gungarlin and Bulls Peaks Rivers is an extensive salient of private land extending into the middle of the Kosciuszko National Park approximately half way between Kiandra and Guthega. It offers superb sub-alpine scenery and often rewards skiers with good nordic skiing opportunities, though this past winter was not forthcoming. Part of its charm is its remoteness which is reinforced by its 4WD access limitation. So the proposed trip, staying or camping at one of the private lodges in the area (Snowy Vale) will be limited by the number of seats available in 4WDs registering for the trip. There will be limited bunks available in the lodge on a first registered / first served basis. The lodge offers full household facilities and the surrounds offer good car camping. Early December is the prime time for the sub-alpine wildflowers to be in bloom and to enjoy spring coming to the mountains – warm days and cold nights. People can explore the country around Cesjacks Hut in the park and out towards the Bulls Peaks or Jagungal or wander up the delightful Bulls Peaks river towards the privately owned Flanagans Hut. |

However, we do have to wade across the Snowy River, (provided its safe to do so). |
