2023-2024 PXC Work Party #4 is on! And there is some good solid work to do.
For those who are not familiar with the Perisher Valley XC trails in the summer, it will be an education in the way that low-tech strategies are used to extend the snow cover on the trails when the water that is constantly flowing under the snow threatens to break up the trail surface.
An exciting addition to this work party will be the 2024 Bridge Project – the construction of water mitigation bridges during the coming summer. A Bridge Project grant has been obtained to build approximately 60 bridge modules. The modules will permanently raise the track over identified water courses, removing the need to install the temporary drainage pipes in some areas before winter. Friedl Bartsch (see the Vale link) will be remembered with fondness and gratitude during this project. He created the original concept that developed into an ongoing resource for future water mitigation works on the XC trails.
Meet at the Nordic Shelter at 9:00am for a 9:30 start. Gum boots will be a good footwear choice but be prepared for any weather. Bring work gloves and lunch/snacks/drinks.
If you plan to attend, please contact Peter Ward (nswxc1@gmail.com) so we can plan the work for the weekend. Likewise, let him know if you can attend any of the extra days after the weekend to take part in the Bridge Project.
Accommodation for the weekend is available courtesy of Canberra Alpine Club, Perisher (FOC for workers, thank you CAC). Contact Peter Cunningham (peter.petercunningham@gmail.com). Bring bed linen, towels and food/drink.
If this sounds like a weekend of hard yakka, it can be, sort of. But be assured that there is lots of chatting, horsing around and socialising during and after work at CAC for all workers.
