2024-2025 Working Parties

Organised by PXC

The new supply of bridge-building steel has arrived along with the summer maintenance list for the trails and the Nordic Shelter (thank you Sonja, John, Carol and Andy!).

If you skied last winter, you will have noticed, firstly, that it was a short season. You may not have realised that the season would have been much shorter if not for the new water-mitigation bridges and covers installed on the Sprint Loop and the start of the Valley Trail. The bridges performed exactly as intended and kept those areas usable for skiers, teaching and events in spite of the running water that would have closed them in previous years.

4 figures in the foreground, shovelling snow to keep thin ski trails open. It is a sunny day and the snow is glistening slightly. In the background is a road filled with parked cars.

The section between them NOT requiring shoveling is a Bridge!

The Department of Creative Industries, Tourism, Hospitality and Sport grant that provided the materials for the bridges will be fully expended this summer on the construction of the final water-mitigation bridges. It is physical work that benefits from extra bodies to help with moving and installing the steel frames and mesh. Please note that there will also be the usual program of Nordic Shelter and trail summer maintenance.

The first and very important Work Party is scheduled for the weekend of 16-17 November 2024  to bring in the drainage half-pipes and covers that helped control water on the trails over the winter. This essential job is a prime example of “many hands making light work!” Preparation of steel for bridge assembly will also start this weekend with the possibility of extra days on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday TBC.

As usual:

  • If you can attend all or part of the Work Party, contact Peter Ward (nswxc1@gmail.com).
Bring gum boots, work clothes for any weather, lunch, snacks, crockery and cutlery. Hot water urn, sandwich press, microwave are available at the Shelter.
  • Many thanks to Canberra Alpine Club for providing accommodation for Work Partiers.
If you require accommodation, please contact Peter Cunningham (peter.petercunningham@gmail.com). Bring bed linen, towels and food/drink for meals – shared dinner on Saturday night is always an interesting social occasion.
